He Forgot to Feed the Cat They Got Together Last Month.

In 2019, we are telling the story of a romance over the course of 9 months and 13 chapters. Each chapter will feature some combination of art, ice cream, cocktails, baked goods, and music. The good was better than the bad. Jennifer reminded herself of that now and then, more and more recently, but still, she loved living with Nick and who she was around him. And Nick had never been the sort to question the dumb luck which had brought Jennifer into his life. They had a great time living together. Of course they bickered about things, some that didn’t matter, some that did. Once in a while there was a fight where one or the other would be sore for a moment until one or the other apologized or one or the other got over whatever had made them sore to begin with. If it sounds vague, if the details are fuzzy, it’s because Nick and Jennifer never let the bickering or the rare fights carry on too long, and no one remembered the bickerments or hurt feelings the next day, let alone the next week. Of course, Nick leaving clothes on the floor or Jennifer leaving dishes in the sink, or worse on the table after dinner, were regular topics of heated, no, wait,  luke warm, debate, but really what kind of couple isn’t impacted by that kind of thing.

Several months after they moved in together, they were walking home from somewhere, wherever, you decide, when Nick noticed a small, shabby cat trotting along next to them proudly, amiably, unconcerned. He had long hair which was mostly black with some gashes of white fur on his face and neck, and had something sticky, a sap or oil, in the fur around his head. Jennifer mentioned that the mats and peaks of hair formed by the stickiness made the cat look like a feline Robert Smith. The cat walked along with them two blocks home without acknowledging them once, like a cat. When they walked up the porch to their door, the cat sat down primly on the sidewalk and looked up at them. Nick said, “So long, Robert Smith” and they went in the house. A few hours later, Nick went to the store for a minute and texted Jennifer after leaving to say Robert Smith was still outside, though when Nick got back, Robert Smith was gone. That night through the screened window they heard a cat crying from the street and since it was about to start pouring and since they were feeling domestic and since you already know from the chapter title they adopt Robert Smith, Jennifer sent Nick down to the street to fetch Robert Smith and bring him inside. Jennifer figured they could take Robert Smith to the vet the next day to see if he had a chip, and he could hang out in the bathroom until then. The only cat-like food they had was a can of tuna, so Robert Smith feasted. They didn’t make any accommodations for Robert Smith having to go to the bathroom, but since this is a story, let’s just assume everything worked out. Of course Robert Smith wasn’t chipped, so in the vet’s office they decided to get him chipped, de-wormed, and found out despite his size, he was only 3 months old. Then after a stop at the pet shop, they brought Robert Smith home with them.

Robert Smith was a terror, but also very sweet, and after a few weeks of transition, he was part of their home. He was a good cat. Jennifer had always had cats growing up and Nick hadn’t. And he. Just. Could. Not. Remember. To. Feed. Robert Smith.

It happened a few times, and over the course of a week or two, Jennifer went from being amused to annoyed to deciding she’d just do it every night to deciding there was no reason for her to have to do that to her becoming apoplectic every time it happened. It turned into a thing, they’d never had any things in their relationship, but this was definitely one. It was a pattern. Nick tried his best to remember and for a few weeks everything would settle down and then he’d forget again and Jennifer would lose it. The Feeding Robert Smith fights were epic marathons of pent up anger and bad feelings and of course the days long fights were never just about feeding Robert Smith. They became the grounds upon which any other issues were battled and they’d last until Nick and Jennifer were exhausted of fighting each other. Eventually, they’d make up thinking they were stronger for getting through it, not realizing the damage they were doing saying things which couldn’t be unsaid. The euphoria of having fought and then no longer fighting someone you love blotted out any insight either of them could have had about anything to come. And the good was better than the bad.

Nick and Jennifer loved living together. They did. They really did. Everything was amazing and perfect. It was. It was amazing and perfect to have lunch together on weekend afternoons, fresh French bread loaves with cheddar and arugula, fried egg sandwiches, anything. It was amazing and perfect to watch movies without roommates complaining about the noise, to sleep with the bedroom door open. It was. Nick loved being so close to Jennifer all the time. He was constantly inspired, and had never had so many new ice cream flavor ideas. He wanted to impress her, to be interesting and exciting. When he looked at her she sparkled, and when he left the house in the morning he’d be so full of her he about wanted to burst. It was amazing and perfect. Jennifer felt her heart being squeezed on the night’s she’d come home from work to the smells of whatever Nick was cooking for dinner that evening, her entire face would scrunch up with a smile like a full moon when she heard him singing quietly to himself, unaware she could hear. It was amazing and perfect. They both agreed constantly.

And yet. And yet. And yet. No. It was amazing and perfect, really. But, once in a while Nick or Jennifer would see something they hadn’t thought of as any kind of issue before they lived together. Nick wasn’t the tidiest, which had been cute before they lived together, or if not cute, ignorable. He had a whole dresser for his clothes, but generally he wore what he wore the day before or pulled his clothes out of the clean laundry basket he planned on folding later, tomorrow, this weekend. Jennifer was tidy, generally, but for some reason, she couldn’t make the connection that dishes put in the sink still had to be put into the dishwasher. And she wouldn’t stop buying books even though the shelves were full and she didn’t read THAT much. There were other small unaddressable traits or flaws, things, there were other things which hadn’t yet become resentments, but you could see how they might.

And then there was bedtime. This one was a surprise. Before they lived together, Nick would just go home when he was tired, or if they were at his house, he’d go to bed. Lots of mornings he had to get to the shop early to meet the dairy delivery, and if he didn’t make it, they couldn’t spin ice cream that day, and if they didn’t spin ice cream that day, they wouldn’t have ice cream the next day. And Jennifer could nap, wow could she ever. She’s sometimes get home from work before Nick, fall asleep for four hours and then wonder why she couldn’t fall asleep at a decent hour. And it wasn’t too big of a deal, as it never is at the beginning, but Nick would get frustrated if Jennifer started another episode on Netflix or took a long time getting ready for bed, and then they’d bicker, and then it took him forever to fall asleep. Or Jennifer would get annoyed he couldn’t wait up 15 minutes for her to finish her evening routine.

And it wasn’t too big of a deal, as it never is at the beginning. It was amazing and perfect, the little home they were making together. It’s just… The bedtime thing was like the tang a strawberry gets right before it turns. The strawberry’s still good, of course, delicious, juicy, it’s just red sky in the morning, sailor take warning, you know?

“I made a strawberry shrub inspired by the last sentences: ‘The bedtime thing was like the tang a strawberry gets right before it turns. The strawberry’s still good, of course, delicious, juicy, it’s just red sky in the morning, sailor take warning, you know?’ I used champagne vinegar in the shurb because champagne it sparkles like "she sparkled." I chose goat cheese because it has a slight tang and honey is often associated with love.”

It’s possible neither Jennifer nor Nick would have taken the initiative to have a “move in” conversation when they did if Jennifer’s lease wasn’t ending. They’d been dating for 9 months and more often than not spent the night together at one of their apartments. Often Nick’s because he only had one roommate, a quiet friend from high school who they would go days without seeing. Nick didn’t mind staying at Jennifer’s, but she had 3 other roommates. With that many personalities, it was always at least on the verge of an issue if Nick was there for two nights in a row or four nights in a week, or it didn’t really matter how often he was there until one of her roommates thought it was too much.

When the landlord sent a lease to Jennifer’s roommates a couple months before it was ending, she started thinking a place of their own might make sense. She mentioned the lease casually to Nick at dinner that evening, but he didn’t pick up on the clue. The next week, she mentioned it again and suggested they could maybe save some money if they moved in together, you know if his lease was ending anyway, too. He said it was, and two days later they started looking at places. Nick wanted to live in the apartment above the ice cream shop, which didn’t seem like a good idea to Jennifer. Jennifer wanted to live in a 5th floor walk up, but only until Nick pointed out how many books she had and would have to move. (Jennifer didn’t find out Nick’s lease didn’t end the same month as her until the day before they moved in together. He’d never had a lease. His friend’s dad had bought his friend the apartment and Nick had an arrangement where he paid rent intermittently, but cooked and cleaned regularly.)

Eventually, they found a place a little more expensive than they had wanted, and a little smaller than they were hoping for, but a little closer to work for both of them than they’d expected, and with a really nice oven to boot. It got great light in the afternoons, and since the windows were only a few years old, it was the first place either of them had ever lived without a draft.

When they moved in, Nick was surprised how many clothes and books and framed pieces of art and kitchen gadgets Jennifer had. This collection of… well, stuff, had somehow been masked in her previously larger apartment. The first day they were in their new place, before practically anything was unpacked, Jennifer had made Nick help her hang all of her art. She’d never been able to hang anything at her other apartments for one reason or another and she was ready. Nick’s only contribution to the walls was a Pinterestesque screenprint with hand-drawn type detailing the differences between ice cream and gelato. After hanging everything, they sat on the front stoop with a bottle of wine and quietly watched it get dark in their new neighborhood.

Jennifer had always been a journaler. Even when there was nothing happening in her life, she’d made a habit of it, and it helped her think things through when there was something happening. Lately she hadn’t been able to describe her feelings for Nick in anything other than cliches. It was then she realized she might be in trouble. Good trouble, but still. Even her realization she was in trouble was cliche, and look, reader, I know this is a cliche way to write about a character wondering if what they’re feeling is love, but here we are, together. The thing about all her feelings sounding cliche as she wrote them down is they didn’t feel cliche to her. Every way she felt about him was new to her, exciting, interesting, terrifying.

Nick and Jennifer had had the “relationship” talk several months earlier after their fifth date. They’d been spending increasing amounts of time together, almost all their free time outside of work. Jennifer still relished some nights or mornings alone, which she’d invariably spend grinning moonily thinking about something Nick had said or done: the time he fell flat on his back while they were videochatting and they’d laughed for ten minutes, the time he’d walked into the wrong apartment while talking to her on the phone, the time she made him call the Senator’s office about a bill and he did and hated it. Jennifer was in the middle before she knew she had begun, and it was scary. She’d had relationships end in disappointment before, but she’d never been afraid of having her heartbroken. She cried and then smiled while writing in her journal one evening when she realized Nick could break her heart.

Nick was a bit simpler. Quite a bit simpler. Around the time Jennifer was writing in her journal about her potential for heartbreak, he’d been listening to music while walking home from work and heard the lyrics, “I never felt like this before, I say that every hour,” and that’s when he knew. 50 times a day something reminded him of Jennifer, and it was only good.

He didn’t need to hear Jennifer say, “I love you” to know for sure she did, and he just assumed she knew he loved her back. Nick assuming Jennifer knew how he felt about her, or food, or movies, or anything, really, would eventually become a problem, but he hadn’t realized that yet. We’re not there. Patience. The day after hearing that lyric on the walk home, Jennifer told him she’d gotten in a fight with her family about green vs white mint chip ice cream, and that was about all he needed to know for sure how he felt. He wasn’t scared. He was happy. He was calm.

They both knew. Even before either of them said anything, they both knew there was something between them. Before either of them said anything, Jennifer found herself waking up counting down the hours until she could reasonably go in for coffee at Spilt Milk during work. Neither of them could tolerate the weekend. She’d stopped scheduling meetings from 2-3 and then from 1:30-3:30. For his part, Nick had suddenly become far more efficient than he'd been. That is to say he became efficient for the first time in his life, making tomorrow’s bases while spinning today’s ice cream instead of waiting until the spinning was done. He wanted to make sure he didn’t have anything on the stove when Jennifer came in. (Early on, Nick had lost track of time while listening to her talk about books or movies or music or anything and had burned some fudge, resulting in the introduction of a flavor he called Smoky Chocolate. (It sold.))

The tension between them was delicious, but it was also agony and exhausting. Finally, one Friday afternoon, Jennifer left the shop in a hurry after only 10 minutes. Nick watched her stand in front of the shop for a minute. Then he watched her start to walk away, turn around to walk back in the door, stop, turn around again to walk away, before finally walking back into the shop, telling Nick about a new restaurant she’d heard about and ask if he wanted to go with her sometime. She left again as soon as Nick said yes and then when she came back on Monday she pretended nothing had happened on Friday.

It was another week and a half before Nick realized he was expected to make reservations and ask her out and another week before he did. When they finally went out, three weeks later, it was frigid, but Nick had added a winter beach walk to the agenda before dinner. They’d already talked so much about everything before their first date they hardly said a word as they listened to the wind scream and the waves shatter. It was really not a beach day. Nick remembered Jennifer saying something about sometimes feeling like a bag of tea in the ocean. Jennifer remembered Nick trying to hide his chattering teeth. Afterward they walked to the restaurant Jennifer had wanted to try, the food was good, the service pretentious, and their toes didn’t warm up until the entrees arrived. They both fell asleep that night, in separate apartments, thinking it had been wonderful.

She’d come in to the shop in the afternoon for coffee usually, sometimes tea. There were several places she could go, but she’d made Spilt Milk Creamery her regular. It wasn’t the closest or the best coffee, but it was the third closest, and better than others. Plus, in the winter, there was NEVER a line. It was cozy and comfortable and it became her regular. Double plus, if she felt like it, she could get an ice cream with her afternoon coffee and none of the other places offered that.

After a couple weeks of stopping by Spilt Milk Creamery, she met Nick, one of the ice cream makers and chatted a moment about one of the flavors she’d tried the week before. He wasn’t there the next day, but he was the day after, and then it seemed he was always the one making her coffee. He was pleasant and funny and she got the feeling he was, on occasion, giving tasks to the staff so he could be at the counter when she came in. Nick had told her that anyone who made ice cream at Spilt Milk had to be trained on the counter first, and most still worked counter shifts when they weren’t making ice cream.

They’d chat for a minute if she was in a rush (he never seemed to be), but if she had time, she’d sit at the counter by the window. Nick would lean over the counter and talk to her for as long as she stayed. About anything, everything, nothing. When she left the longer chats, she'd feel fizzy. He'd later tell her had had, as well, but she could never tell. She wondered if there might be something, he wondered, too, but she could never tell. It was weeks of conversation before Nick or Jennifer realized it was something. And weeks more before either of them did anything about it.

“I like this flavor for the chapter because the lavender is subtle and alluring. The bittersweet orange marmalade is obvious and up front, but the gentle floral hints from the lavender are hard to place.”

Gregg Manley, Jr, Boston, MA, Cocktail Lab at Earl’s Prudential, @guhregg

For this drink I wanted to capture the look, the taste, and the innocence of blushing when we look at the person we are beginning to crush on.

In tall glass: 0.75oz Grenadine, 0.50oz Orange Juice
In shaker with ice: 1oz Old Munk Rum, 0.50oz Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum, 0.50oz J Wray & Nephew Overproofed White Rum, 0.75oz Ginger Honey Syrup, 0.75oz Lime Juice, 2 scant barspoons of Orange Blossom Water

Shake

Fill tall glass with crushed or pebbled ice

Strain mix over ice and watch as the grenadine and OJ at the bottom of the glass “blushed” upward into the rest of the cocktail. Splash of Gingerale on top.

Years later, the thing he’d always remember about the first time he saw her was her outrageous red scarf. It must have been cold, because her cheeks were pink, steam showing off her breath. She didn’t look like anyone he’d seen before. The scarf was bandana red and long enough for four necks at least, five if they were skinny. He only saw it once, that first day he saw her, and always wondered about it. Later, after they’d gone on a couple dates, he asked one time about the scarf and she didn’t know which one he meant. So that was weird, but he knew he’d seen the bright red scarf too long for one person when he saw her the first time.

Months later, during the early part of their relationship, he’d lie in bed before getting up in the morning and think on her. He’d always believed in love at first sight, even if she didn’t, but when he thought about it, it hadn’t felt like a movie scene. He hadn’t thought to himself, “That’s the girl I’m going to marry.” He hadn’t thought, “I need her. I need to kiss her.” When he saw her the first time, with her red scarf, it wasn't love at first sight, but he had felt a certain magnetism as he wondered, “Who is that and where’s she from?”
